The legacy of the Eagle and Hawk,

Chumash Legends and more.

This book will present an overview of Chumash culture and tradition, entailing short stories, photos and illustrations to convey the integrity of the author and the contributions of the art work from Frank Dominguez. These cultural and traditional movments take place during a very precipitous time for Chumash people for they are becoming rarer and rarer in the beautiful and bountiful lands of Southern California, in the Santa Ynez valley where resides, the powerful River Turtle People from the village of Kalawashaq.

The Chumash people believe the Sky People are playing a hand game with each individual, family and tribe. The Sky People observe and are responsible for the spiritual movements and physical experiences that are encountered in the daily lives of traditional peoples. Sky People such as Sun, Moon, Morning Star, Sky Eagle and Sky Coyote are betting on which path an individual and families will follow. The stories are a blend of the author, his family and clan experiences and moments encountered as traditional dancers and practitioners. Some of these stories are translations of their family oral history and Chumash/Yokuts lineage.
